2017-2018 Lehigh Valley Heart Ball
Our heart journey began February 14, 2011, Valentine’s Day, as we entered our 20 week ultrasound with nothing but joy and excitement in our hearts to see our sweet baby. We never expected to hear the words, “something looks wrong with your baby’s heart” or begin a different path filled with fear, uncertainty, and tears. Many fetal echocardiograms later and a consult with the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, our son was officially diagnosed with Tetralogy of Fallot, a complex combination of four structural problems with the heart only repairable through open heart surgery which he would need soon after birth. Ryder was born through an emergency c-section on June 10, 2011 with a broken arm and low stats and eventually underwent his open heart on September 6, 2011, just before turning 3 months old and following an episode at home when his whole body turned purple. During his hospital stay he was also diagnosed with 22q duplication syndrome which is a rare genetic condition affecting his 22nd chromosome. His first few years were filled with over a dozen specialists and early intervention services…countless trips to the hospital… many sleepless nights… fear and uncertainly…post traumatic stress disorder… but Ryder has proven to us all how brave and strong he is. He is starting 1st grade in the fall, loves playing with his best friends, traveling, movies, legos, and riding his bike! He has taught us the true meaning of the words faith and courage. Now as we wait for his 2nd open heart surgery to replace his pulmonary valve, we spend as much time as we can laughing and making memories and paying forward the blessing that came into our lives on June 10, 2011. Bless his HEART!
